How Do Ductless Mini Splits Work?

Unlike a traditional central air conditioning system, heat pump, or forced air heater, a ductless mini split does not require the use of air ducts in order to distribute conditioned air throughout a house. Instead, wall–mounted blowers are installed in the home in place of a central air handler unit. An outdoor unit is installed outside, and the blowers are connected to that unit via conduits housing power and refrigerant lines.

During the summer, refrigerant cycles through the indoor units and evaporates, removing heat from the air in the house before traveling outside to disperse that heat outdoors. In the winter, the coils in the indoor blowers and the outdoor unit swap responsibilities, so that the outdoor unit can absorb heat from the air outside, compress the refrigerant, and use its heat to very efficiently warm the living space.
