Thermostats

For the most part, homeowners have very little contact with their HVAC systems. Yes, you should be changing the air filter in your forced air heater or AC regularly, and you should be keeping your outdoor unit free of debris. In general, though, using your HVAC system is a fairly hands-off affair.

The major exception to this rule is, of course, the thermostat. Your thermostat is the means by which you communicate with your heater and air conditioner, and you have more direct interaction with it than with any other component in your HVAC system. That is why having the right thermostat is so important.

Choosing the Right Thermostat

While the thermostat on your wall is a pretty small piece of equipment, it obviously plays a major role in the day to day operations of your heating and cooling systems. Taking the time to ensure that you are able to get the most from your thermostat and that it suits not only your system but your own user preferences is time well spent. • Digital thermostats. At the very least, we strongly urge you to consider upgrading to a basic digital thermostat if you are still using an old manual round or slide model. Digital controls offer more concise temperature setting and maintenance. Choosing a programmable model adds the ability to set heating and cooling programs around your own personal schedule.
  • Wireless thermostats.Have you ever had to slog out of bed in the middle of the night just to adjust the thermostat? Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to do so ever again? With a wireless thermostat, a receiver is installed on the wall and wired into the HVAC system, while the thermostat itself is free to travel the house with you. This is ideal when replacing a thermostat that was not installed in an ideal spot.
  • Smart thermostats. Are you ready to really integrate some impressive technology into your home? Then why not opt for a smart thermostat? With a smart thermostat, you can control your thermostat and HVAC system from an app on your phone, tablet, or PC. You can also take advantage of home automation features, enjoy outstanding energy savings, and more!
